Game Of Thrones Season 1 Episode 7
"You Win Or You Die" is the seventh episode of the first season of the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. This episode aired on May 29, 2011. In this episode, the political intrigue and power struggles that have been building up throughout the season come to a head as various parties vie for the Iron Throne.
The Plot
The episode begins with Ned Stark, the Hand of the King, investigating the death of the previous Hand, Jon Arryn. Through his investigations, Ned discovers that Jon Arryn was murdered for discovering that Cersei Lannister's children were not fathered by her husband, King Robert Baratheon, but by her twin brother, Jaime.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Viserys Targaryen continues to pressure his sister Daenerys into marrying Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki, so that he can have an army to reclaim the Iron Throne. However, Viserys becomes increasingly unstable and violent, culminating in his attempt to steal Daenerys' dragon eggs.
Back in Westeros, Ned confronts Cersei with the knowledge he has gained about her children's true parentage, and urges her to flee the city with them to avoid the wrath of King Robert. However, Cersei has other plans and arranges for Robert to be fatally wounded in a hunting accident, clearing the way for her son Joffrey to take the Iron Throne.
Ned, who had been appointed as regent in Robert's absence, plans to have Joffrey removed from the throne and to place Robert's younger brother, Stannis, in his place. However, his plans are thwarted when he is betrayed by one of his own men and arrested for treason.
The Themes
"You Win Or You Die" deals with several themes that have been explored throughout the series. One of the most prominent themes is the idea that power corrupts. Throughout the episode, various characters are shown to be willing to do whatever it takes to gain power, whether it be through violence, manipulation, or betrayal. This is exemplified in Cersei's plot to have Robert killed and in Ned's attempt to overthrow Joffrey.
Another theme that is explored in the episode is the impact that family relationships can have on politics. Cersei's love for her children drives her to take extreme measures to protect them, while Viserys' obsession with his family's legacy blinds him to the fact that the world has moved on without them.
The Reception
"You Win Or You Die" was well-received by both fans and critics. The episode is widely regarded as one of the best of the first season, with many praising its shocking plot twists and political intrigue.
The Bottom Line
